Our Curriculum
A Journey of Faith and Learning
RE
Through the teaching of Religious Education, we intend to make a distinctive contribution to the school curriculum by developing pupils’ knowledge and understanding of religion, religious beliefs, practices, language and traditions and their influence on individuals, communities, societies and cultures. We aim to promote knowledge and understanding of Catholic faith and life. Religious Education aims to enable pupils to consider and respond to a range of important questions related to their own spiritual development, the development of values and attitudes and fundamental questions concerning the meaning and purpose of life.

Phonics

At St Mark’s, we want to equip all our pupils with a secure phonic knowledge that enables them to read and write successfully. Children will be able to apply their understanding of letters and sounds to decode a range of words which in turn will allow them to read books that are closely matched to their phonic knowledge. When writing, children will be able to make phonically plausible attempts at unfamiliar words, enabling them to write with an appropriate level of independence for their age. They will also be able to use their phonic knowledge to correctly apply a range of spelling rules to words.

Computing
Our computing curriculum has been specifically tailored to meet the unique context of our school. It is designed to be broad and balanced, providing all pupils with the opportunity to master their learning and deepen their knowledge, making sense and giving purpose as to why we learn about computing. Teachers will provide pupils with challenges about computing, which will help them change and transform our society, putting their faith into action.

Modern Foreign Languages
Francis Arinze, a Nigerian Clergyman once said: “The Catholic faith never changes but the language and mode of manifesting this one faith can change according to people, times and places.”
At St Mark’s Catholic Primary School, we believe that the learning of Modern Foreign Languages provides a valuable educational, cultural and spiritual experience for our pupils. It helps our pupils develop communication skills including key skills of speaking, listening and extends their knowledge of how the language works. Learning other languages gives our children new perspectives on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others.
